Abstract
Objectives £º The aim of the study was to develop North Korean version of Alcohol Use Identification Test and assess its reliability and validity.

Methods £º North Korean defectors (n=206) were recruited from North Korean counseling call center. Psychiatrists and psychiatric residents interviewed the participants. Psychiatric diagnosis were given to those who met criteria for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV. Participants then completed the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-North Korean version (AUDIT-NK), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-North Korea (CES-D-NK), Impact of Event Scale-Revised-North Korea (IES-R-NK), and alcohol section of Brief Psychological State Inventory for North Korean Refugees (BPSI-NKR-alcohol). After one week, the same questionnaires were administered to 131 participants to assess test-retest reliability.

Results £º Cronbach¡¯s alpha value indicating internal reliability was 0.88 for AUDIT-NK. The test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.91. Pearson correlation coefficient between AUDIT-NK and BPSI-alcohol was 0.80 for males and 0.71 for females, indicating high convergent validity. Good discrimination and validity of AUDIT-NK were evident based on its low correlation with CES-D-NK (males, 0.16 ; females, 0.00) or IES-R-NK (males, 0.16 ; females, 0.03).

Conclusion : AUDITNK is a valid and reliable measure to assess symptoms of alcohol use disorder in North Korean refugees.
